1. An Introduction to Hilton Brand: What is Hilton? Hilton History

For many people, the name Hilton instantly brings to mind the famous socialite (or an Y2K iconic IT girl) Paris Hilton. Yet beyond the spotlight lies a global hospitality empire that has shaped the hotel industry for more than a century. So, when was the Hilton Group founded, and how did it become one of the world’s most influential hotel companies?

In this article, Chibikiu takes a closer look at the Hilton Group and the iconic brands that make up its remarkable portfolio.

1.1. What is Hilton?

Hilton is one of the world’s largest and most prestigious hospitality companies. Founded in 1919 by Conrad Hilton in the United States, the company has spent more than a century building a diverse portfolio of hotel brands spanning the economy, midscale, upscale, and luxury segments. Today, Hilton caters to a wide range of travelers, from leisure guests to business professionals, through an extensive collection of brands designed to meet every travel need.

With a presence in more than 100 countries and territories and thousands of hotels worldwide, Hilton has established itself as a global leader in the hospitality industry. Beyond its renowned service standards, the company is recognized for its award-winning Hilton Honors loyalty program, its commitment to sustainable development, and its continued investment in innovative technologies that enhance the guest experience.

As of December 31st, 2023, Hilton’s portfolio comprised 7,530 properties (including timeshare resorts), representing 1,182,937 rooms across 118 countries and territories worldwide.

Of these properties, 51 were owned or leased directly by Hilton, 800 were managed by the company, while the remaining hotels operated under franchise agreements. This means that the majority of Hilton-branded hotels are owned and operated by independent investors or hotel owners under franchise arrangements, while adhering to Hilton’s global brand standards, operating procedures, and service requirements.

1.2. Hilton History

Hilton’s history began in 1925, when Conrad Hilton opened the first hotel. With visionary venture, he set out to build the finest hotel in Texas. Guided by his unwavering dedication, exceptional leadership, and pioneering spirit, Hilton continued to grow and establish itself as a leading name in the hospitality industry.

In 1943, Hilton became the first coast-to-coast hotel chain in the United States following the acquisition of two prestigious New York landmarks: The Roosevelt Hotel and The Plaza Hotel. This milestone marked Hilton’s transformation into a truly nationwide hotel brand, with a presence spanning from the East Coast to the West Coast.

Throughout its growth, Hilton has consistently been at the forefront of hospitality innovation. The company became the first hotel corporation to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1946, the first to introduce a centralized multi-property reservation network—the Inter-Hilton Hotel Reservation System—in 1948, and the first to establish an airport hotel brand in 1959.

In 1967, Trans World Airlines acquired Hilton International. Following the acquisition, Conrad Hilton stepped down as President and assumed the role of Chairman of the Board, continuing to guide the company with his long-term vision.

After Conrad Hilton’s passing in 1979, Hilton continued its remarkable journey of growth, steadily expanding its global footprint and reinforcing its position as one of the world’s leading hospitality companies.

A major milestone came in 2006, when Hilton Hotels Corporation reacquired Hilton International, reuniting the two businesses under a single organization for the first time in four decades. The merger significantly strengthened Hilton’s global brand portfolio and further solidified its standing as one of the world’s premier hospitality companies.

3.2. Hilton’s Hotel Portfolio in Vietnam

Although Hilton entered the Vietnamese market relatively early, its presence in the country remains modest. The opening of Hilton Hanoi Opera in the 1990s was a landmark moment, as the hotel quickly became one of Hanoi’s most iconic luxury properties. However, over the decades, the rapid expansion of Vietnam’s hospitality industry and the arrival of numerous international hotel brands have gradually diminished its prominence, leaving Hilton Hanoi Opera as a symbol of a bygone era.

Today, Hilton’s portfolio in Vietnam is concentrated primarily in the select-service segment, with many of its newest properties operating under the Tru by Hilton brand. These hotels are largely located in smaller cities and emerging destinations, meaning Hilton currently lacks a flagship property that truly stands out in Vietnam’s luxury hospitality landscape. Nevertheless, the fact that most of these hotels have opened only in recent years reflects Hilton’s continued commitment to expanding its footprint and strengthening its presence in the Vietnamese market.

5. Hilton Brand Review

5.1. Hilton Brand Review

PROS

  • A long and distinguished history spanning more than a century
  • An extensive global network of hotels and resorts
  • Hilton Honors members can redeem reward points for stays at Hilton-affiliated hotels, including participating properties that are not directly managed by Hilton

CONS

  • Limited brand presence in international markets outside the U.S., particularly in Vietnam.
  • Its economy and midscale brands lack strong market differentiation.

5.2. Hilton brand comparison

To gain a clearer understanding of Hilton, I will compare Hilton with several of the world’s leading hotel management groups. This comparison is intended solely to provide a broader perspective on the brand and should not be interpreted as criticism or an attempt to diminish any hotel groups.

compare hilton brands

From a global perspective, Hilton ranks as the third-largest hotel company in the world, reflecting its immense scale and international presence. However, the picture is somewhat different in Vietnam (my country). Compared with competitors such as IHG, Marriott International, and Accor, Hilton has yet to establish a particularly strong market presence.

It is worth noting that, unlike some of its competitors, Hilton does not have a hotel or resort in Vietnam that has achieved international recognition . IHG has InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort, while Marriott International boasts JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay Resort & Spa—both widely recognized as benchmark luxury resorts in Vietnam. Hilton’s flagship property is Hilton Hanoi, which was once regarded as one of the city’s landmark hotels. Although it enjoyed a distinguished reputation in the past, its influence has gradually diminished, and today it no longer commands the same level of attention within the hospitality market.

compare hilton hotel

Ultimately, a hotel’s market presence is closely tied to the strategic priorities of its parent company. While hotel groups such as IHG, Marriott, and Accor have invested aggressively in Vietnam, Hilton appears to have placed greater emphasis on other markets.

This becomes even clearer when looking at Hilton’s financial performance. According to Hilton’s 2025 Annual Report, nearly 80% of the company’s revenue is generated in the United States, compared with approximately 45% for IHG. These figures illustrate that Hilton’s primary strategic focus remains the U.S. market, which partly explains why its presence in many international markets, including Vietnam, is relatively less prominent.

Another important aspect to consider is Hilton Honors –  Hilton’s loyalty program. Overall, the benefits offered by Hilton Honors are broadly comparable to those of other major hotel loyalty programs, with similar elite tiers and member privileges.

However, one feature that truly differentiates Hilton Honors is its partnership with Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH). Through this collaboration, Hilton Honors members can earn and redeem points at participating SLH properties, giving them access to a collection of independently owned luxury boutique hotels beyond Hilton’s own portfolio.

This partnership offers a level of flexibility that few competing hotel loyalty programs can match, as most reward programs limit point redemption primarily to hotels within their own brands.

Since SLH properties are renowned for their distinctive character, exceptional design, and highly curated guest experiences, this significantly enhances the value of Hilton Honors and represents one of its strongest competitive advantages over many other hotel loyalty programs.
